In 2010, Kaoz re-emerged onto the hip hop scene, collaborating with numerous hip hop, pop and R&B artists from across the country. The Tyler Durden EP (Experience) released June 2010, was followed up by The Tyler Durden Mixtape (released August 2010) completing the Fight Club trifecta. Kaoz is releasing an album entitled, Enter-SexTions early 2013, and more recently executive produced a full length hip hop CD Real Talk–which tackles HIV/STI prevention, stigma and homophobia (released 10/25/11).

The Golden Thyme Coffee Café and the Saint Paul Almanac are pleased to announce the "Soul Sounds Open Mic," hosted by Tish Jones! An open mic dedicated to all of your favorite love poems. The poems you recite to whisper into the ears of the one you desire most and the poems that you have to re-read twice because you can’t believe how good they make you feel. This is an evening dedicated to all of the work you’ve ever written for that special someone, a night when you can express love to family, spouses, cities, food, sports teams—whatever! It’s all for the love.

February 6, 2014 – Soul Sounds Open Mic with Lydia Hoglund and Writing Workshop

Lydia Hoglund is the lead singer of Bomba de Luz, and the collaborator of many hip hop acts around the Twin Cities in Minnesota. Any kind of music she can try, she tries. Though Lydia is currently gearing up to hit the road with Rhymesayers’ hip-hop giants Atmosphere, Toki Wright, and Dem Atlas this February, Bomba De Luz is at work on its third album, set to be released in June of 2014.

January 30, 2014 – Soul Sounds Open Mic with Michael Lee

Michael Lee is a writer, performer and youth worker. He is a recipient of a 2014 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant as well as a VERVE Grant. Michael ranked ninth at the 2011 Individual World Poetry Slam and was named the 2011 “Best Individual Poet” of Collegiate Nationals (CUPSI). His work has appeared or is forthcoming in Rattle, Indiana Review and Criminal Class Press. He lives in Minneapolis where he works as a youth counselor at Avenues for Homeless Youth and drinks entirely too much coffee.

January 16, 2014 – Soul Sounds Open Mic with Clara Yonge

Raised in New Jersey and currently living in Minneapolis, Clara Younge works in Saint Paul as a math tutor and a pastry chef. Her work has been published in the Feminist Wire and in 2010 she won Macalester College's Cultural House poetry slam. Clara is an alumn of the Voices at VONA writing workshop. Her poetry is obsessed with sound, seeks truth through themes of identity and ancestry.

January 9, 2014 – Soul Sounds Open Mic with Marisa Carr and Writing Workshop

Marisa Carr is a multidisciplinary artist, poet, composer, and performer. Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she now lives in Minneapolis. Marisa believes in art as a vital tool to engage, challenge, and mobilize by intersecting the personal, political, and spiritual. Her work is situated physically, emotionally, and intellectually within the various communities of which she is part. Marisa especially enjoys facilitating projects with youth, and helping young people learn to use art as a tool to speak back to power and explore their hopes and visions for themselves and their communities. She is Turtle Mountain Ojibwe from the turtle clan.

December 19, 2013 – Soul Sounds Open Mic’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Mic

Being that Soul Sounds is a community event we feel it important to create a space for dialogue around issues facing our community. Rooted in the arts, this evening will focus on addressing HIV/AIDS in our various communities. Perhaps you have written a piece paying homage to a loved one who lost their battle with HIV/AIDS? Maybe you have a poem of encouragement, a song that educates, or more? Tonight is the night for us to address a major issue in the Twin Cities community, through art and creative expression, while maintaining our sense of mutual love, adoration and respect.

December 12, 2013 – Soul Sounds Open Mic with Chia ‘Chilli’ Lor

Chia 'Chilli' Lor graduated from Saint Paul Central High School as an active participant in the social justice performing arts program, Synergy, and is currently attending St. Catherine University. Her poems have been published in local literary journal, Paj Ntaub Voice (“Storycloth Voice”) and the 2012 edition of the Saint Paul Almanac. Chilli has been invited to perform at open mics, reading series, conferences, racial equity trainings, the Minnesota State Capitol, and a variety of community events. Chilli is part of an APIA spoken word group, Speakers of the Sun (SOS). Her work has taken her into schools, nonprofits, and district planning councils. As an emerging community organizer, poet, and hip-hop artist, Chilli has a vision of impacting the lives of youth, communities of color, and women through the performing arts.

December 5, 2013 – Soul Sounds Open Mic with Hieu Minh Nguyen with Writing Workshop

Hieu Minh Nguyen was born and raised in Saint Paul, Minnesota, by a Vietnamese-American single mother. He is the author of This Way to the Sugar (Write Bloody Press, 2014) and co-coached the 2011 University of Minnesota poetry slam team, which placed fourth at the College National Poetry Slam. In 2011, Hieu was also a member of the 5th-ranked Minneapolis adult National Poetry Slam team. Today, Hieu is a member of the Good News Poetry Tour, which travels across the country performing at colleges and universities. He is a proud alumni of the Central Touring Theatre and also works at a haberdashery.

Joseph Terrance Adams was born one minute and two seconds after his deceased twin brother, Jeffrey Tyrone Adams, on November 19, 1983. God rest his brother's soul. Joseph graduated from Washburn High School in 2002 and is married to Tequilla Adams. They have two "whatever they want" lifestyle-living daughters, Alana and Alayia. Joseph describes himself as "over-the-top, overprotective, and over this 'whatever they want' world my girls reside in. But they are my pride and joy, and I pride myself on being able to provide the best life possible for them. I just complain about it along the way. I'm also a 'Rebel Music'-loving Bob Marley fan. And wish Dave Chappelle was my Black President."

November 14, 2013 – Soul Sounds Open Mic with Kayla Steward

Kayla Steward, 19, graduated from Saint Paul Central High School, where she started writing poetry in the sixth grade and started slamming when she was sixteen. Kayla has won two local slams and was selected through the (K.)N.E.W. MN Youth Poetry Slam Series to be a part of the MN Brave New Voices team. She is currently enrolled at Saint Paul Technical College.
